My Story Through Mental Health Struggles to Ethical Fashion
The art of balancing state of mind and creative spirit
As Tala Kate, the creative force behind Jovvy Sevirino, living with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been incredibly challenging. My story is a testament to human resilience and the power of art. Embracing my creativity and mental health struggles as two sides of the same coin empowered me to reach success.
Working within the ethical fashion industry, each design I create reflects the vivid highs and profound lows that characterize living with BPD and bipolar 1. Like other artists who focus on mental health, I aim to contribute to destigmatizing mental health through my work, offering both solace and inspiration to those who relate to my story or my art.
Join me as I explore how my personal experiences have shaped my vision as an artist and designer. For me, the worlds of creativity, mental health, and ethical fashion are intertwined. Keep reading to learn how I live with them.
Back to my roots
My story begins in the vibrant landscapes of the Philippines, where my childhood was cradled in the nurturing hands of my grandfather. His influence was profound, instilling in me the values of resilience and sustainability from a very young age. Raised on Camiguin Island, my early years were imbued with the rhythms of nature and the resourcefulness of island life.
In 2010, my journey took a significant turn as I moved to Honolulu, Hawai‘i. This transition marked a change in location and a pivotal moment in my personal and professional development. Adapting to a new environment, while challenging, offered fresh perspectives and opportunities, deepening my appreciation for diverse cultures and practices.
My path has been shaped by over two decades of meticulous planning, testing, and refining designs. This long-term commitment reflects my dedication to creating with purpose and integrity. It’s here that my journey intersects with my diagnosis of bipolar 1 and BPD, conditions that have been both a challenge and a catalyst for growth.
Living with bipolar and BPD has been an exercise in balance and understanding. It has taught me to navigate the complexities of my emotions, channeling them into my work. My designs are reflections of my life’s journey – encapsulating the resilience, creativity, and perseverance that have defined my experiences.
Through my brand, Jovvy Sevirino, I aim to tell stories. Stories that resonate with the challenges and triumphs of life, stories that connect with people beyond the aesthetics. My journey has been marked by embracing the lessons learned and continually striving to combine my personal narrative with my professional aspirations.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others who might be facing similar challenges. It’s a reminder that our journeys, no matter how fraught with obstacles, can lead to meaningful and fulfilling destinations. My life in the Philippines, the nurturing from my grandfather, and the experiences in Hawai‘i have all culminated in Jovvy Sevirino, a brand that stands for resilience, creativity, and the beauty of transformation.
Managing a business with mental health struggles
The nuances of my mental health, particularly living with bipolar disorder and BPD, have significantly influenced my approach to business and design. These conditions, often misunderstood, have offered me a unique perspective, shaping the ethos and aesthetic of Jovvy Sevirino.
My journey with bipolar disorder has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, the manic phases of bipolarity have fueled bursts of creativity and grand visions for the brand. These periods of heightened productivity have led to some of the most innovative designs and daring business decisions. The flip side of this is the challenge of maintaining consistency and focus, especially during the lows of the disorder.
BPD brings intense emotional experiences and has taught me the value of empathy and deep connection, both of which are vital in understanding customer needs and preferences. This understanding has been instrumental in crafting designs that resonate with people’s stories and emotions, making each piece a companion in their life’s journey.
My mental health influences have also steered the brand towards ethical fashion. The mindfulness and awareness that come with managing my conditions have translated into a conscious business practice. This is reflected in my choice of sustainable materials, ethical production processes, and a commitment to social responsibility.
My personal experiences have shaped the brand’s narrative. I am proud to create one that champions openness, breaking the stigma around mental health. Integrating my life’s story into the brand shows that it’s possible to create beauty and success even amidst life’s challenges. This approach has defined the brand’s identity and created a strong, authentic connection with our customers.
Creativity isn’t just an outlet for me—it’s a lifeline. The manic episodes that come with my bipolar disorder often initiate a rush of ideas and energy, intense periods when my design philosophy really comes to life. A pause in achieving certain goals is sometimes a necessary step for personal growth and re-aligning with my core values.
Embracing the lows
During these times, my mind is awash with inspiration. It’s a powerful and exhilarating state, where the challenge lies in channeling this surge into productive design work. I sit down with my sketches and materials, transforming the cascade of ideas into tangible designs. This is when I’m most bold and innovative, pushing the boundaries of conventional fashion design.
Embracing design in these moments has become a crucial part of managing my mental health. It allows me to harness the energy of my condition in a positive way. This process is therapeutic, a means to find balance and purpose amidst the unpredictability of bipolar disorder. In doing so, I turn a challenging aspect of my life into a source of creative strength and identity.
A designer’s path through triumph and trial
Integral elements of my bipolar disorder, notably grandiosity and delusions, have marked my journey with formidable challenges. These experiences, while daunting, have also been profound teachers, shaping both my personal life and the direction of Jovvy Sevirino.
Grandiosity has often led me down paths of overambition. Early in my career, this manifested in setting unrealistic goals and taking on more than I could handle, both creatively and in business operations. The impact was tangible: burnout, strained relationships, and projects that, despite their potential, remained unrealized.
Delusions have been equally challenging, painting a version of reality that, while convincing, was often far from the actual state of affairs. This distorted perception affected my decision-making processes, leading to choices that, in hindsight, were not aligned with the brand’s sustainable and ethical ethos.
Recognizing and accepting these aspects of my condition has been a significant step in my journey. It has allowed me to develop strategies to mitigate their impact, such as seeking regular counsel from trusted advisors and maintaining a balanced perspective on my capabilities and goals.
These experiences have profoundly influenced Jovvy Sevirino’s business approach. I’ve learned to embrace a more grounded and realistic strategy, ensuring that each decision aligns with our core values and long-term vision.
My vision for ethical fashion that cares
Looking ahead, my vision for Jovvy Sevirino is both extensive and grounded in the lessons learned from my past. Educationally, I am keen on deepening my understanding of sustainable practices and ethical fashion. This knowledge will not only enrich my personal growth but also enhance the brand’s commitment to responsible design.
In business, my aspiration is to grow Jovvy Sevirino into a leader in the world of ethical fashion. I envision a brand that stands out for its unique designs and its dedication to sustainable manufacturing practices. This involves partnering with artisans who share our values and ensuring that every aspect of our supply chain aligns with our ethical standards.
